Default Techy home network help needed

Ok long story short two laptops one internet connection. Win XP on
both.

Laptops connected by cable they see each other but all I get is
limited or no connectivity?

Ran the set up wizard on both boxes still no joy.

I know Im a bit of a muppet but this is supposed to be easy wtf am I
doing wrong.

Just get a cheap router. No hassles then and far more secure. ~£10-£15 these
days.

Same cable that used to connect the somewhat flooded tower to either
of the two laptops and that worked fine?

It connects to both the network connectors I really dont know what it
is called.

When I click the repair button it just comes up with unable to renew
your IP?
