Default So that's why my garage smells of petrol

Spent a fairly profitable afternoon fettling the turbo (setting the
TPS, unseizing the rear brake etc).

Just as I was finishing off, with the bike up on the bench, something
caught my eye - a falling drop of something from the front of the
tank. A quick investigation revealed that the tank is leaking.

Bollocks.

So, I guess I have several options to get it sorted for Chimay
1. Try and bodge it myself (Petseal? Fibreglass? Help me...)
2. Try and get it fixed professionally
3. Try and borrow one (Sweller? Mike Buckley?)
4. Try and get one from a breakers (I'm fairly sure the non-turbo
tank is identical fitting).

Any other ideas?

Temporary bodge with some chemical metal in readiness for Chimay,
followed by a complete strip down, repair and repaint upon your return?

If you can see where it's leaking from then I'd suggest using some
petseal. I've used it on the BMW I commute on with no problems. Helps
if you can get it inside the tank as well as outside.

I'm pretty sure I've got some left over in the garage.

It's pretty obvious. But, it looks like it's been repaired before -
there looks to be a plate of something attached to the original seem.

Prolly won't be able to get it inside.

Coo. Can you have a look? I'll collect tomorrow if so.

In that case DanL's chemical metal bodge would probably work. My old SWM
started to leak a bit a couple of days before a hill climb years ago.
Fairly obvious weep from a seam on one back corner of the tank. Bodged
it with chemical metal from the outside only and it was still OK two
years later when I got rid of the bike.

Somebody on 750turbo.com must have a tank, post a wanted ad on there. On
the outside chance "turbofunk" has one I'll pick it up and bring it to
Warwick for you.

I used a 2 pack sealant on my RD and it's lasted 4 years so far, I
reckon it'll be a perfect mould of the tank long after the metal has
rusted away. Can't remember where I got it from though - mailorder
through a Leeds bike shop I think - wasn't Kreem.

I'm taking my Turbo to Chimay - so I'm afraid you can't borrow mine!

Did you try your replacement TPS?

Depends how fast it's leaking - it might just be a case of extra fuel stops
and avoiding naked lights.

My K100 leaked petrol for ages. My bike clothes stank of it. It was
only when it was hanging around on me after I'd got changed that it
bothered me.

Well... I went to Heathrow on Weds. They'd blocked the road that led
to my usual parking space... I forced the K75 between the bollards and
the pavement, only later thinking that a jumpy policeman might have
thought it was time his trigger finger got exercised...

I used Petseal on the BlingMobile tank and it seemed to work well.

I note that TOG is offering you some old stuff, just be aware that it
does have a shelf life, so make *sure* it'll go off before you use it. A
tank full of Petseal that won't quite harden sounds like a world of
hurt.

I'll resort to that if tomorrows effort with Petseal and/or plastic
metal doesn't work.

>Did you try your replacement TPS?

I measured them both with the multi-meter, and they were both in spec.
So, I adjusted the position while it was ticking over, and got a much
better idle. But then I discovered the petrol leak, so that was the
end of that.

Empty it, then run a pipe from the exhaust of another vehivle into the tank
and leave the engine running for 10 minutes. Now it can be gas welded, mig
welded or tig welded without a problem. Just make sure it doesn't smell of
petrol after the exhausting job.

If you can bodge it up enough to get it and bike here en-route to Chimay
it'll be a simple swap over - same on the return. I'm not leaving until
early Saturday and will be in all day on the Friday.

In a pinch I've used Araldite with some success on the classic Jap seam
leak.

Guzzis have a habit of rusting out behind the badges. Initially I used a
3M petrol resistant glue (the name of which escapes me) swilled about
inside the tank which lasted 10 years until two years ago when the hole
was about the size a 5p; I then used chemical metal and body filler.

Well, the extremely high speed blast to your place this morning
definitely cheered me up :-)

I didn't use the Petseal in the end, cos it said it needed 12 hours to
cure, and that's considerably longer than I was prepared to wait. But
the other stuff you gave me seems to have done the job. The area that
was leaking had already been fixed once, with fibre glass I think; I
prised it off and was greeted with 4~5 small holes (big enough to put
some lockwire through).

So, I cleaned it all up, mixed up the goo (which is just a variation
on body filler, I think), smeared it on and waited the 10 minutes the
instructions indicated. It seemed solid enough, so I put some petrol
in and left it for an hour (while I replaced the KPH speedo with an
MPH one I got off ebay), and it's dry.

Just about to go out on a test ride.

Nope, went to visit some mates who live 10 miles away. The bike
hummed along at 100mph, happy as larry. The fuel injection is
definitely better now.

Then I got a call from Gyp and the darling T, inviting me to dinner.
So, leaving my readers in supense, I went straight there.

Don't attempt to repair it in any way, shape or form and end up running
out of petrol or at least having to stop every 50 miles to top up for
the whole weekend.

It's the only way for Chimay.

There's also the potential for better and more thorough
luggage-incinerating.
