I've been using them since 2005 - used them for the trip to Croatia so they have seen all sorts of terrain and weather. A couple of months ago Bike did a tyre test for this type of bike: Avons came out near the top. IIRC, only tyres with no off road pretensions came higher. -- wessie at tesco dot net BMW R1150GS |

Irritatingly, I did have that issue of Bike, but it got accidentally chucked before I read that article. Can you remember which "no off road pretensions" tyres were tested? I have seen a Tiger fan site where the guy has put BT020s on, which seems an odd choice, though he reports them as very good. He also rated Pirelli Scorpion ST90s - any experience of those? -- d. |

I'd only consider them if I was going to do lots of motorway miles as they wear less than Tourance[1] in that situation. PipL rates the Scorpions on his Guzzi. IIRC Verdi liked them on the deceased Tiger. Not tried them myself. > ISTR Conti Road Attacks were in the review. that's the ones - my independent service bod has a set which he is about to fit to his 1150GSA so I will see what he thinks of them in due course. IIRC he has always been a Tourance fan in the past. They'll need to be very good and cheap to make me change from the Avons. [1] I always found Tourance to be very good except they are more prone to squaring off than the Avons or Metzeler Enduro4s. Also, if you are going to go touring in the south of Europe in summer the Tourance will go fairly soft and wear quite quickly IME. I found this out on my trip to Italy in 2003. -- wessie at tesco dot net BMW R1150GS |

They're certainly cheap, and I reckon they're pretty good, but I ride like a girl, so what would I know..... -- SteveH 'You're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa Romeo' www.italiancar.co.uk - Honda VFR800 - Hongdou GY200 - Alfa 75 TSpark Alfa 156 TSpark - B6 Passat 2.0TDI SE - COSOC KOTL BOTAFOT #87 - BOTAFOF #18 - MRO # - UKRMSBC #7 - Apostle #2 - YTC # |

I tried to find a scan of the Bike mag article on UKGSer. No luck. The top three tyres were Dunlop D607, Conti Road Attack and Avon Distanzia The first two are road only tyres. The Avons have a similar pattern to Tourance and are fine on a bit of mud or gravel. -- wessie at tesco dot net BMW R1150GS |
