I beg to differ...

The new rings would be explained by the honing as part of the engine
"overhaul". Ok, so it may be high mileage but he could have had
it blueprinted - check the power claims. You don't get that much
of an increase over the standard EXUP with just head work!

The forks are from a much later bike and would be far more suited to
the kind of bike it looks like he's trying to build. Aside from the
better range of adjustments available in them, he's now also running
the better brakes from the R1 too.

The rest of the bike follows this "special" theme - digi-dash, Harris
rear-sets, exhaust, fairing, etc.

People don't just replace forks because a bike has been in an accident.

I would guess that he either had the original EXUP many years ago and
got bored with it so decided to make a better bike out of it, or that
he picked it up really cheap as the donor bike and set about it to
bring it upto date.

You may be right and perhaps I'm just being too cynical about why people
mod bikes. It does look good though but I'd be surprised if it goes for
much more than 2.5 – 3K.
I've got it in my items to watch list just so I can be proved horribly
wrong

The guy is honest enough to invite people to view it
before hand. This would be the real test - looking for
damage on parts that are uneconomical to replace such
as frame and engine block, snapped fairing lugs, that
kind of thing.

Besides, even if it did have a small drop there may
well be nothing wrong with it anyway!

Why not just buy an R1, though?

Because it's a clitoris bike?

Yeah, there is that, but I just don't get it. It's going to cost
more, be worth less, not be as good and take time and effort. Just to
be "different". And now he's selling it - why?

I doubt it would cost more - probably slightly less.
As I said before, he may have had the bike from new,
or got it really cheap from a mate or something. If
it doesn't owe him anything, there would only be the
cost of parts to take into consideration.

He may have got the R1 forks cheap off a mate who bought
some Ohlins for theirs, have another mate that does
welding and made up the exhaust, picked up a cheap
Stack dash from a racer he knew, and so on. Done over
time these things would cost a couple of hundred here
and there but would hardly be noticed. In fact, it may
well have come from a racer who was selling up.

If the bike is an EXUP, even with the mods it's probably
cheaper to insure than a new (even a new-ish) R1.

It's different alright, and I like it. I expect half
the enjoyment is in building the thing in the first
place and making it a much better bike than it was -
don't we all do that in some way? Even just by adding
a double-bubble screen has the same thought process
behind it, just not to the same extent.

As for selling? Maybe he's broken a leg, been diagnosed
with 3 weeks to live or has lost his job and needs cash.

Whatever the reasons it's people like him that make the
rest of us riding standard bikes look boring.

Important part of the equation is that the EXUP is just a very nice bike to
ride and about as fast as the modern 600 crop. With the exhaust valve in
place and working properly they pull rather well. Some harsh engine vibes
are the only downside.
