Orange don't "Bodge the OS"; Nokia/S60 do this for them.

It's quite a competent phone, however I'm still happier with my SE
K800i; the N95 is just slightly too large and too battery thirsty (but I
do spend upwards of two hours on the phone every day.) Plus I'm not a
massive fan of the S60 user interface.

On a vaguely related subject - have you had a play with the Nokia N770
'Internet Tablet'? - they're seriously cheap these days and appeal to my
inner geek. Very tempted to get one.

Bloke at work got one of those a few months ago and seems happy with it.
That said, he's well into Digg and stuff, pretty much a 2.0 kinda guy,
so I wouldn't trust his judgement as far as I could throw it.

speaking of which, my blackberry 8800 (big pearl) arrived. Nice unit.
The only negative thing I have found is not being able to save
attachments from emails to the microSD card. Stupid thing to miss was
that.

I've wondered about that but assume it's because the attachments aren't
in the format that they were attached (IYSWIM); I presume the blackberry
server has changed it into a more efficient file format. It's the model
I use at the moment; the IM is great... I don't believe there's the same
legal responsibilities on businesses to keep IM logs as there are to
keep email (could be wrong though...)
