Four strokes don't have their rings pegged (in the same way as a two stroke) and the rings jiggle round quite happily. Whether they're 120 degrees spaced or not the scoring wasn't caused by blow by. If it was it's convenient that it's so accurately spaced around the piston. -- Simon |

Having looked further into piston rings, their spacing and end gaps, rather than just taking the word of Wiseco, it appears I was talking, and believing, bollocks and neither spacing *or* end gaps are to blame for your engine's problems as they are both largely irrelevant! Nope, you're thinking of their car engines. Valve seals are made to hold back oil in long term immersion. Piston rings are made to hold back spontaneous pressure. Even with pegged rings if you upend an engine full of oil it will eventually all percolate out. People are talking bollocks about the K however. What side are the cylinders on? What side is the sidestand on? No I don't know why they sometimes smoke when left on the sidestand either! not all do and not all do every time. -- Hog '03 ST4S '96 Bastard12 '89 R100RS '81 XS650 '78 RD400 |

TBF the old dogs do it more, not because the bores wear, the rings do. I don't know what special Nikasil process they use on K bores but if you run up 50,000 miles then strip the engine the *very* light and fine diamond honing marks are still perfect. Throw in new rings, run them in, new engine time. -- Hog '03 ST4S '96 Bastard12 '89 R100RS '81 XS650 '78 RD400 |
