Looked at one in the shop. Realised that it would be (a)
uncomfortable, and therefore (b) left at home all the time.

well, I bought mine by accident (it was inside a leather jacket that I
bought).

A accident that resulted in no injury to you, thanks most likely to the back
protector.

the first time I wore the jacket, actually riding the bike as opposed
to standing in the shop, it really hurt my neck, as the back protector
was too long for me (I'm fairly short).

Amazingly, and this suprised me, you can get back protectors in different
sizes:

Hopefully you'd at least fit the one in the 4 to 5 foot tall size.

If I may stick my oar in here. I had a fairly serious bike accident, which
the doctors reckoned my injuries could have been worse if I *had* been
wearing the right equipment [1]. As it was I ended up getting away with
just having a toe ripped off.

[1] Proper bike boots

If it's all the same to you, I'd rather opt out of the humour grading bands
that operate around here. Cheers.

"and in one throwaway comment, the happy-go-lucky cheery-chappy image
that Gorman has presented as his face to the world is peeled back to
reveal the roiling horror, the demented anguished half-formed
demi-soul that cowers beneath".

Or it would if I were not wearing, rather sensibly, an image being peeled
back protector.
