what OS is on your laptop?

If its windows 2000 or XP goto
start
run
type
diskmgmt.msc
click OK
and see if its in there but needing partitioning and formatting

(in the grey area in the bottom where it says disk 1 etc right

If its win 98 etc

try
Start
Run
type
command
click OK
in the command window type fdisk and see if your drive shows up
there.

Big caution though with all OS's its easy to feck things up with
disk config stuff..
