It's actually quite easy :

Great Britain = The Big Island (England, Scotland, Wales). Includes
outlying islands like the Shetlands, for convenience.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland = The three
above, plus Northern Ireland.

It only breaks down when describing people as "British Citizen", which
is used to mean someone who is a citizen of the UK.

Looking at history, the strong are those that unite - the Roman
Empire, the British Empire, the "American Empire".

Independence is unlikely to be a panacea, but it does provide extra
layers of politicians who can deny responsability for actually doing
anything.

Extra layers? You're taking out Westminster. The number of layers stays
much the same.
