One will have to someday. Today's as good a day as any (unless they try to
do it right here, the hailstones would put paid to that idea!)

Watching the live feed now, I thought it was on it's way down, but it was
evidently the plane thingy circling as it went up (camera angle was odd) I
saw it launch a few minutes ago - strange blob of vapour, which then
spread out upwards as it shot off.
The plane is just coming down on it's own now, so the rocket should be due
back in about an 30 mins to an hour, I think?

And it's just landed.

Quite exciting really, despite the godawful video from the BBC site.

Very.

"Dad, can we take the ship out?"
"Only if you pay for the petrol!"

It's a cool thing, for so many reasons.

Governments and their ballastic systems? Stuff 'em.
Give me something that looks like it was designed by
a 1960s comic book artist and actually works...

I seriously think there must be some very unhappy people at Nasa, who've
been saying to their bosses for years, "Look, this is a better way to do
things! We could save loads of cash." But have met with the all too
familiar reply, "Calm down with your new ideas son, this is the way it's
always been done, that's just too risky."

*That's* what it reminds me of - I was originally thinking it looked
like the Bell X-1, but now I realises it looks more like something Dan
Dare or a Gerry Anderson puppet would fly.

I've now been told that's true.

Doesn't this thing run on burning tyres and have a nitrous injection system?
A bit like the R1 that passed me in Scotland then.

That's exactly what occurred to me - "straight out of Captain Scarlet"
was my choice of phrase.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember wfg1001@mrao.cam.ac.uk (William
Grainger) saying something like:

AOL. Pure Rutan, that thing.

It was only straight up and down again, though. The real test will come
when they or someone else go orbital and have to re-enter properly. I
don't think that craft will be the one.

Excellent stuff. I think I know where I can get rid of that old rear
tyre now.
