Default Part 1 test Pass! What next

So, my girlfriend has just passed her Part 1 test and as such is restricted
to 38bhp.

What recommendations do the group have for a bike for her? She doesn't like
big bikes (is scared by my 600 Hornet), not interested in going fast but
will want a new bike that looks OK.

So group, what would you go for?

Thanks in advance

Tom

Why would she want a new bike?

38BHP? You mean 33BHP.

SV650, they respond really well to restricting.

SV650. Most bikes are physically a similar size IMO, it's all in the
head. I had an SV650S restricted to 33bhp and it was a very
user-friendly, confidence inspiring, easy to ride machine. It was even
better when it was put back to how Suzuki intended.

Failing that, anything that allows you to see her leather-clad arse
when following. I recommend a sportsbike for this as she'll have to
lean forward somewhat to get to the bars.

Considering the models that this bird will be looking at, I don't think
there'll be a great difference in size. A 10R isn't massively different
from a 6R, R1/R6, and I don't think an SV650 is massively different to
a 400.

If you walk into a dealer showroom with all the bikes shoehorned into
neat rows you have to look at the stickers to see what they are. In the
OPs context, a bike is big if it's got a big engine. As a newbie I
thought of bikes being physically bigger and much heavier if they had a
bigger engine. I now know it doesn't really make as much difference as
I originally thought.

Obviously, a goldwing is a larger bit of kit and there's the odd thing
like the latest "BMW fugly-bastard", but they fall outside of "most".

I'm with darsy on this. Even if a pair of bikes have a similar silhouette
the ergonomics can make one uncomfortable or even unrideable IME.

How can a pair of bikes have similar silhouettes yet be considerably
different in physical size (other than the silhouettes being taken side
on, for example, and one bike being literally a mile wide)?

A change in handlebar position needn't make a significant difference to
the silhouette but could make the world of difference to the riding
position.

*ding*

The mid 1990s 900cc Triumph Daytona being an example. Similar silhouette to
the universal Jap sports bike of the day but *I* could not get comfortable
on it. The bar position did not suit my relatively short upper body.

Yamaha MT-03, look good & once restricted, it makes no difference at
all.

Easy to ride, fast enough to kill you & they handle very well for that
kind of bike.

However, the original statement was about the size of bikes and not
wanting a big bike (like his big 600), not riding positions.

Uh-huh, so why did you introduce 10Rs into the thread?

Also, to be even pickier, you took the OP's ambiguous use of the word big
[1] and assigned it to a specific attribute, the physical size. Then you
went on to make a generalisation about "most bikes" which was, as darsy
succintly stated, "bollocks".

[1] IMV he was referring to engine size/power as the Hornet is a dinky
little bike, physically.

The only ebay item I've ever put up that's had no bids and no watchers
with only a day to go.

Mind you, I bought a GPz550 the other week, and paid for it with about
1/3rd of the junk in the garage; I've got at least another grands worth
of crap to get rid of.

You did ask. However, if there's any tips on making a "good" listing,

I've no idea.

Apparently, starting an auction with the words "you are bidding on"
gets certain wicked uncle's hot under the collar. Good job he hasn't
noticed that all my auctions have started like that.

That's ok - your lawyers are crap.

Thank goodness you're not using your ex-wife's lawyers

It definitely has been said here but I don't recall by whom. I am,
however, happy to back you up and blame Nigel.

if not interested in going fast, a 250 crosser might be a good plan. it
should take well to being dropped a couple of times and the visibility
afforded by the height would help to build confidence.

Here's one of them damn fool questions:

How come (on the assumption that they don't; because I've never looked or
seen) manufacturers don't publish the shape of the rider they designed
around? After all they do consider the rider, right?

I've not got a clue what I want next. I want little and fun and sporty but
I have no idea what I'll fit on. I should meet up with some of you lot and
smile at you till you let me sit on what you brung I suppose.
