Default ot: Snuff

I've got this eccentric mate I occasionally have a beer with. He's a
60 year old photographer who was big in advertising in London during
the 60s & 70s.

One of his accessories is a pipe which he obviously can't use inside
the pub anymore. To combat this he took from his waistcoat pocket an
antique and rather ornate wooden box about the size of a matchbox and
snorted some snuff. Being the curious type I asked to try it and found
that I quite liked it.

This evening I met him after work and he produced from his walnut
briefcase a red plastic box of Red Bull Strong Snuff as a gift. It's
menthol and damn near blows my head off. On the back of the box it
says "Very Addictive"

Just what I need.

From the thread title I thought that you were going into movie production,
and were looking for actors.

Snuff is basically fine tobacco so if you have an addictive
personality then you're going to get hooked. European snuff is dry
and normally scented whereas Merkin snuff is moist and you're supposed
to shove it up your gums.

We used to use it when i worked down t'pit. Back then i was a smoker, so a
hit of snuff helped. especially on 12 hour shifts.

He should stand around with the pipe clenched in his teeth, just not lit.

I used to do snuff in the early '80s. Many people thought it was some dodgy
illicit substance.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Cane <CaneUKRM@gmail.com> saying
something like:

IIRC, my Dad used to use snuff to make his home-grown tobacco almost
smokable. Foul stuff, it was.

School Caretaker, and I haven't smoked since I was 21, which was 26 years
ago.

My m-i-l gave me my f-i-l's snuff-box as a keepsake, having helped him to
die with as much dignity as was possible. With the imminence of the
smoking-ban, I hauled it out into the sunlight again. Even after all these
years, the tobacco was still delicious. I'd question the "Very Addictive"
as just more nanny-statism.

99.99% of Scandinavian snuff is the moist variety as well. I am
solidly addicted to nicotine and use snuff [1] because it's cheaper,
to dodge all the smoking bans and it just might be a tad less lethal.

You get much higher nicotine levels than by smoking and over here
it's generally recognised that it's more addictive.

[1] Not "real" snuff but the modern tea-bag sort, not quite as messy.

Isn't that the stuff that's cut with glass so that when you place it
next to your gum the abraded gum gets the nicotine into your bloodstream
faster?

That's an urban myth. There is regular salt and maybe some other
salts (in some flavours) that can form clear crystals if the snuff is
not too wet. That is probably how the rumour started.
