Default OT: Pyrenees in September - any tips or advice?

As subject.

The general idea is a flight to Biarritz, hire car and mosey through
the hills for a few days.

Nice scenery etc but things to do can be a little sparse ime.

Personally I'd make it a day trip and stick with Languedoc unless you've
already done the area to death.

Sounds like fun.

IME car hire is a bit cheaper if you get it on the Spanish side so check
out flights to Bilbao etc.
http://compare.carrentals.co.uk/ and
http://www.kayak.co.uk/ are pretty good price comparison sites

<interest piqued>

Although, the £109 BA return fare from Gatwick to Toulouse might be the
best bet. Conveniently avoids Ryanair's flight to Biarritz, with the
baggage con. Car hire from Toulouse is a reasonable £118 for a week, if you
can tolerate a Seicento/Ka.

Seems good value. I might just have to check my holiday hours balance and
have an autumn there too...

Manchester to Perpignan same price and a whole lot closer to where I
live...

I can get a Focus sized car for about a tenner more through a CSMA
deal

Just hope I pick reasonable hotels to plot up at...

A quick dash into Andorra to look for stuff may be on the agenda, too.

Logis de France should provide plenty of choice if you stay on the French
side. Paradors if you fancy a bit of a treat on the Spanish side.

Sit on the roof terrace at the sealife centre in Biarritz, drinking
copious amounts of coffee whilst watching the sealions in the roof-top
pool. A great way to waste some time when the weather's nice. Then
watch all the tottie that pours onto the beach at lunchtime.

SWMBO is flying to Biarritz next week to walk another section of the
GR10 footpath that runs the length of the pyrenees. TBF walking, cycling
and kayaking are the attraction for most people once away from the
casinos of Biarritz. A Perpignan arrival puts you in easy reach of my
favourite part of the range. Massif du Canigou and then Massif du Carlit
and Puigmal. The Cerdagne is an amazing prairie-like plateau at 3000
feet. Some ancient walled towns to visit and the 'little yellow train'
is fun.

As wessie says check out the Logis site.

As you will be out of season a quick dash might be on. Otherwise the
road up to Pas de la Casa is one big traffic jam in high season (as is
the one main road through Andorra).

Have a wander down the coast via Collioure, Ceret market on a Saturday,
or getting stuck into some oysters & filthy cack further up the coast
around Port des Roussillon.

Well Michelin Local map (1:150000) 344 Aude/Pyrenees Orientales covers
pretty much all the region from the coast inland to Foix. You can get
that one from Amazon.

As we do a fair amount of walking we usually go for the IGN 1:25000
(Serie Bleu or for better contour display Carte Topographique). SWMBO
favours the 1:50000 Carte de Randonee series for her highish level
treks, but you probably don't need that much detail.

This seems like a good place to have a look for maps and guides.
http://www.themapcentre.com/acatalog/france_maps.html

Not much in to guides ourselves except for an ancient 'Shell' (Petrol)
one of the whole of France we sometime consult if in a new area.

Hotels? No idea, we camp - see my post in the caravanning in cornwall
thread. TOG might know of one.

Great fun. Although I see from one of the links that it may have been
modernised recently :-(

Lac de Bouillouse (accessible by a few kilometre shuttle bus ride only
these days from a huge car park) and the smaller Lacs de Carlit (these
are a fair walk from the bus drop off point) are beautiful.
