I never cease to be amazed by the way people make this sort of
statement.

Whilst I find it hard to believe that God exists, I have no basis in
fact to prove he *doesn't* exist. I suspect he doesn't exist but I
don't know this to be a fact.

You don't give it any thought at all and yet you know "it's bollocks,
end of story". Well, you must have given it some thought to arrive at
that conclusion. And anyway, you seem to post on religion on a regular
basis; mainly to say it's bollocks, quite evangelical really.

What happened, did the vicar interfere with you when you were in the

Where did we come from then?
Is this really happening or is it a figment of our imagination? In fact,
is it a figment of someone elses imagination? How do you know that we
are not so infinitely small that reality ceases to exist?...

Irrelevant. If you define God simply as whatever was responsible for
us being here then of course it exists. Generally the word "God" is
used much more precisely.

For me God is the reason everything happens, including my existence. I
don't know about your existence because you might not actually be here,
but my brain might be tricked into thinking you are.

heh, I gave it some thought years ago, realised it was a scam and have
disregarded it ever since with no more trouble than the tooth fairy and
monsters in the cupboard.

I don't respect other peoples faith at all. In fact when someone tells me
they're religious it dissapoints me and my estimation of them falls in the
same way it would if they told me they thought the earth flat.

The big bang was what made our universe (allegedly). I reckon it could
just as easily be some quack in a lab somewhere working on nuclear
fission and petri dishes. We could actually be so infinitely small that
the universe as we know it could just be a petri dish and we are no more
than cultured bacteria.

Wrong. All that statement proves is that we can't see to the edge of the
universe.

Bigger than a mere mortal such as me can articulate. I've seen
(imagined) it in moments of inspired consciousness but there's no way I
could ever answer a question as big as that in my lifetime.

> how do you know that when you sit on your chair it will hold your weight?

It doesn't hold my weight at all. Gravity is keeping my chair on the
floor and gravity is keeping me on the chair. It's not that the chair
can hold my weight but it's gravity that's preventing me from breaking
it.

Yes that was rather weakly explained, wasn't it? :-)

I mean that biological materials like wood, oxygen, carbon and stuff all
have their own way of binding together to form other objects or
entities.

If these are bound together in such a way as to make it possible to take
the weight of me x gravity to the power of whatever, it's going to be in
a position of..... Oh Christ, I really wish I'd paid attention at school
now. I really know what I want to say but a lack education has dulled my
ability to prove with any reasonable laudableness what I want to say :-(

You see! There *was* a reason for Molly coming out! ;-)

Well, "religion" has more acceptance in society due to it being deemed
"normal" however a cult has the image of being tawdry, seedy,
underground and not wholly acceptable due to its lack of popularity, I
should maybe have said:

religion = popular cult.

the posh bit comes from the cash generation side of religion and the
associated level of wealth associated i.e. beemers outside the
worshipping hall etc.

Yeah, but who made the quack's universe then (chicken and egg)?

That wasn't what I asked, read again. I don't know nothing however the
buddhists try to reach that state when meditating.

I didn't try to prove anything, although apparently the rate of
expansion is slowing if you measure the far red spectrum or something
(see Universe in a Nutshell by Hawkings).

Hmmm, yes, nothing to do with mushrooms or weeds then?

but there's no way I

That's what the cultists get round by using "Faith" i.e. it just is and
they blindly accept the statement and get on with life with the tricky
to comprehend bit neatly bundled away wrapped up in religion.

Sorry, that was a loaded question. It was put to me one night by a
devout christian, his point was "faith" in the chair. I can't remember
much after that as it was a rather lame discussion which highlighted the
pointlessness of trying to change someones personal view of religion.

I tried to use the same arguments as you describe above however what i
did realise was that he was on the same track as me in the discussion
just I had a different value and belief base to him.
