Default [OT] Major WTF?!? (NatWest card reader)

NatWest are sending out card readers to all online banking users - I
got mine today. According to the blurb, certain online activities
required you to insert your cash card in the reader. Fair enough.

However the reader is just like a calculator with a slot in the back
for your card. There's nothing to connect it to your PC, so WTF? I can
only assume it's got a mobile phone built in, that calls a NatWest
server which interfaces with the online banking server. Funky stuff.

OK, bad form to reply to own post but I've just read the sublinks on the
above page and can see how it works.

It doesn't connect directly to the bank.

It has a random number generator that has multiple seeds

The Natwest site can give you a random one-time input number and request a
response that is unique to that reader/card/PIN etc.

I have one for UBS online banking. You identify yourself as owner of the
card by putting your PIN in the card reader, the ebanking site gives you a
code which you enter into the reader, and the reader does a bit of crypto
magic[1] and gives you another code back which you give to the ebanking
site. No mobile phone required (fortunately; the battery wouldn't last very
long).

[1] If SWK comes along in a minute to explain the crypto stuff, I'll pass.
I already have a headache today.

<slaps head>

I have no idea why I didn't think of that. Today, I am mostly being a
TC.

They were days when everyone else was being a TC.

Does rather hamper the convenience of Internet banking if you have to
have a bit of hardware with you any time you want to do something useful
with it though.

I think LTSB are looking at introducing something similar. Yet another
token to add to the collection of RSA fobs and mobile phones begging to
be lugged around.

Give it 10 or so years and we'll have all that crap in a "handy"
organiser and the streets will rejoice because we'll never know how we
did without it.

At least two of the major Dutch banks (ABN Amro and Rabobank) have
been using this system for some years. It works well enough, but,
IMHO, rather defeats the convenience of internet banking from anywhere
- as that is now "anywhere that you happen to have your gadget with
you".

I very rarely[1] make online purchases when I'm not either at home or
at work. I don't think it's all that bad of an idea.

In clogland, it's not just for transactions, it's for logging in,
balance enquiries, transfers between own accounts etc - ie everything
you can do in Internet Banking. Plus making purchases.

Best not forget it on that quick jaunty overseas for work. Oh and as
there is no redundancy around it, card must meet reader, best hope the
non-changeable batteries don't die whilst you're abroad for a period
of time either. <crosses fingers and touches wood>

Wooly thinking hat is on today. I only check my internet banking on my
home or work laptop, and then only on those two networks unless I
really have to do it elsewhere. I do sometimes check accounts before a
big spend, but I did mean banking rather than buying.

If you're talking about an RSA SecurID token, it changes once a minute.

That's what I was thinking. I log into NatWest online banking at home
and at work and am not fond of the possiblity that I need to drag it
around with me. Hopefully it wont be required to just check balances
and stuff.

Mine hasn't arrived yet anyway but I look forward to receiving it so
that I can just lose it.

Assuming it was outsourced, I'd hazard a guess at Infonet, think they're

Be grateful that they're taking security seriously. I just wish it was
the same in France. The most secure part of one of my online banks is to
force users to input a 4 figure pin using the mouse.

Key in the first three digits then wait until the last moment before
keying the last.

I assume you mean mobile phone. I don't bother carrying my PDA, MP3
player, camera etc etc around with me now as the phone does [1] it
all.

[1] For adequate values of "does".

OK - I'll give it a go ...

Yup, that'll work fine. Thanks.

Army version did.

The empty hole, top right, is for the battery.

Wow thanks! I took a chance on
>http://w1tp.com/enigma

and discovered this huge treasure chest of cipher machine info. Boggle!
What a feast!!

And starting from http://w1tp.com it didn't take long to find
descriptions of wonderful devices like "Ranschburg's apparatus for
investigation of comprehension, association, and memory."
http://www.chss.montclair.edu/psycho...seum/x_056.htm

I wonder where the victim was connected?
(I also wonder what kind of results would be obtained from the average
UKRM subscriber.)

Cheers
