Default OT: Linux for noobs

I've got a spare box here with reasonable specs (AMD Athlon XP 2100+
1Gb RAM, 80Gb HD, ATI Radeon X1650 Pro AGP graphics board, yada yada)
just gathering dust and I fancy installing Linux on it and using it as
a dedicated Linux machine for a while to see how I get on with it on
an ongoing basis while I learn the ins and outs of it over a period of
time.

What distro am I looking for? I'd like something with a GUI to start
off with to get used to and a decent sized online knowledge base that
I can refer to in the first few weeks. I assume that covers most
distributions these days so it's hard to pick which one, and I'm not
really sure which will support the majority of my hardware on that
machine.

I might go shopping and pick up a copy of Linux Format (if it still
exists) it to see which distro is living on the cover disc.

Seconded. I've tried others and always come back to this one for ease of
install and support.

LinuxMint 3.0 (Cassandra) (www.linuxmint.com) It's ubuntu 7.04 on
steroids. Has all the non-open-source stuff that ubuntu eschews and
you're going to add later anyway (flash, real, acrobat etc.) PLUS has an
absolutely brilliant start-menu and control-panel that ubuntu lacks.
Seriously, Mint rocks. The only (potential) problem will be the ATI
graphics card, but that's the same with any distro: ATI aren't as
linux-fiendly as NVidia, but if it's an old one then you'll probably be OK.

Would it be a good idea to put Linux on the old (2000 or thereabouts)
DVD SE Graphite iMac I still have knocking around the Chateau?

Never got rid of it, because the DVD facility is nice (only one of the
old fruit-flavoured iMacs to offer it), although I upgraed it to OSX and
stuffed some more memory in it.

I fancy playing with Linux.....

Not too sure what the state of Linux on the Mac is; However this link
may be of interest:

Well, if you've already got OSX on it, I don't quite see the point
TBH. You've already got Unix underneath there if you want to play with
the command line...

I tried Linux on an old clamshell iBook PowerPC G3.
Out of Debian, Yellow Dog and Ubuntu, Ubuntu was the easiest to install
and get on with.

If you fancy playing then try Ubuntu.

It's now back running OS X so in my opinion it's not a good idea to put
Linux on it :-) .

If I had the slightlest inclination, I might be arsed to get linux

still do a halfway technical job.

running osx on a g3 must be bit eyewatering though. you're going to get a

How does it compare to Fedora 6 in terms of
a) ease of installation and
b) usability on an older spec PC ( a PC I tried installing SUSE on and
the core wouldn't even run from the installation disc)?

If it helps I have FC7 (2.6.22.1-41.fc7) running on an AMD Sempron 2600,
1GB RAM, some old Nvidia card, a DVD/RW and 3 IDE disks. It's just a
pile of old spare parts.

If you install from CD/DVD it starts into a graphical interface and it's
a matter of stating you country/timezone/keyboard stuff and letting it
automatically sort out the disk formatting/partitioning. Once that bit's
done you can choose what applications (e.g. Open Office, Firefox) you
want from a huge list. You can let it connect back to RedHad
periodically to get updates. You can run AVG Anti-Virus free edition on
it if you feel it's important.

I had it running on an AMD Athlon 1000 until it died of some cpu cache
error.

A) It just installed and worked... I think the most difficult questions
were "What time zone are you in?" and "See this disk.. do you want me to
just have a bit of it, or can I have the lot?"

B) I've run an earlier version on an duron 900 with no issues, and the
current version flies along on my old Athlon 1800, with 512Mb of Ram.
Just make sure you get the standard iso rather than the 64 bit or sparc,
and it should be fine.

Aye, ubuntu picked up the Intel ABG Mini PCI Wireless Card in my Asus M5N
lapdog without any hassle.

On the offchance that you want a real OS and not a toy for secondary school
children...

I installed Envy and it downloaded an ATI driver for it but I'm not
sure it's working all that well. I wine'd World of Warcraft yesterday
and instead of it running at 70fps it ran at about 1 frame every 4
seconds. However, this could be down to using wine. I'll see if I
can find some Oonix based 3D application later on today to see if it
does anything.

Sometimes it's nice to play.

Have you been able to try VMWare for a comparison with Wine for running
WoW?

I've not tried it. I installed VMWare but am unsure how to get it to
work, perhaps it's only because I've got the 'player' loaded and no
server for it...

No problems here - it it picked up my wireless network straight away.
Though attempts to get it to work on a machine using one of those USB
dongle wireless things was a different matter, and I ended up spending a
tenner on a wireless card. Maybe it's a Dell thing?

Which reminds me, anyone want one of these?
