Default OT: External HD recommendations

I'm after 2 external hard drives to use as photo backups (use one
drive and daily duplicate to the other).

Criteria...

Silent or near-as-dammit.
Under 100 quid per drive
USB2
Min 200 Gb per drive

Current leader is
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LaCie-Deskto.../dp/B000HD1NEW

Any other suggestions?

It's actually sold by Pixmania.

Avoid them at all costs.

I have one of these ..

http://minilien.fr/a0kh93

... and whilst it's constructed to resemble the Mac Mini, it's USB as well
as FireWire and so will work with any computer, I think. And it is
_completely_ silent. I can switch off music, bend my ear over the computer
and external disk drive ... and the only sound I can hear is the hum of
traffic 250 metres away on the place de Clichy.

I got one of these 4 months ago as a media archive:

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/129301

No setup required, seems to work just fine and I haven't really noticed
any noise, just an occasional flashing LED when it's busy.

Only problem is it's full. Still, at that price I might buy a couple
more and start backing up.

I've got a Freecom 120GB "mobile drive"[1], which is 2.5", silent,
doesn't get hot, usb powered, USB2.

You can get the 250GB version for £116[2], which isn't too far outside
your budget. The 160GB is about £70.

I suspect you'll find much cheaper drives in the 3.5" size though (in
fact, Aria have the 500GB 3.5" version of the above for £110.

Is it fanless or does it use a heatsink?

Primarily I'm after backups so I want lots of drives all holding the
same stuff. A more primitive RAID if you like.

Yes, I already have a 100Gb Lacie mobile drive that's USB-bus powered,
but I didn't want the draw of power on my USB hub to get too excessive
so I though externally powered desktop drives would be a better bet.

That looks really good, especially as I can get cashback from Ebuyer

Will just need a bit of gaffer tape over the leds on the front.

For the 3 years extra warranty, and because IME Maxtors tend to die, often.

Yes, I'm quite capable of browsing online stores.

You'll not my first requirement was "silent or near-as-dammit". They
don't always list this in the specs and they don't always tell you if
a drive is going to fail within ten seconds of you owning it or have
annoying leds all over it etc.

Hence a request for recommendations.

Ok, as I said, my Toshiba one is silent from about 3 feet away (I can't hear
it over the PC PSU anyway), and it only has one annoying LED, which can
easily be rectified with a small blob of blu-tak ;-)

That would be just about all of them these days

That's because it isn't really an issue any more

Any drive can do that and the microscopically small sample of opinions that
you will get from ukrm probably won't tell you anything useful. Decide what
best meets your criteria then google for information on it. Also - remember
that it is mainly dissatisfied customers who tend to post information on the
web. You need to consider complaints as a proportion of the volume sold.
If one model has, say, three times more complaints posted than another that
doesn't mean it is necesssarily worse - it might ten times more examples in
use.

Who GAF if it does everything else properly

Maplins are flogging 500 gig Western digitals for about 90 quid. Well they
were two weeks ago when I got one.

Or someone who's trying to build biceps and triceps.

So why not delete the "unpacked" version once you've watched it? After
all, if you're still seeing, you've still got the archive (I assume
you're talking about a shedload of rar files, which is rather quaint) so
you can unpack it again any time you like.

One of these:

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/65399

With two USB drives to attach to it.

Avoid these:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/searc...=SC101&x=0&y=0

As it's a proprietary file system [1] (not sure about the T) and hates
wireless connections to it.

[1] Only works on Windows with their drivers (not sure if it works on
Vista) and doesn't work with Linux.

I've also found (to my disappointment) that Netgear are appalling in
supporting released products with upgrades. Not just for the SC101.
