It thinks that getting 8 from 1,1,1,1,1 and 1 is harder than getting 712
from 25,8,1,10,9 and 50.

Bizarre.

There's 1 way to get the former, and 8 ways to get the latter. Sounds
sensible to me.

Only if you don't understand the rules the thing is working from. Don't
forget, you can manipulate small numbers much easier than large ones.
Computers aren't similarly handicapped.
