I can't be bothered to work this out, but I'm sure someone here will
do it in a few mins. There's an ad for a Ford on TV at the moment - the soft top version of the Ka, I think. Quite a funky ad, it shows the woman driving all day from dawm, to get as much sun as possible. At the end of the ad she's driving towards the setting sun, and as she puts her foot down and accelerates towards it, it appears to rise. So, the question is, how fast would you have to travel to catch the setting sun? [1] not at all hard really. -- Champ : Old enough to know better GSX-R 1000, GPz 750 turbo, ZX-7RR Endurance Racer x 2 GYASB#0;BotToS#2;BOTAFO(T|F)#35;UKRMFBC#2;IHABWTMM J#3;MCT#5;WG*#1;BONY#40;DFV#8;IbW#17;SBS#34;BHaLC# 1 Racing : www.team-ukrm.co.uk. Assuming shes on the equator Earth spins 1 complete revolution in 24 hours, estimate the setting sun to be 9 time zones away (1/4 of the earth) Earths circumference is 24,901.55 miles 1/4 of it is 725.38 miles Forgetting the sun would have set a bit more over the hour you travelled, estimated speed = 725.38 mph ths is probably totally wrong but in my world it makes sense. By the way, the Ford Ka isnt capable of this speed MN Y2K YZF-R1 |

I know the advert in question and it clearly shows the sun as being significantly larger than it is currently. This suggests that the advert is set in the far distant future, as the sun approaches the end of its life. Therefore we have to ask a few more questions: 1. Are we assuming that the Earth's orbit is the same as currently? ISTR that we're due to either lose the moon or have it crash into us long before the sun begins to expand. 2. What the hell is running the car? Oil reserves are never going to last that long - is this some kind of nuclear fission model? 3. What are the chances of knocking over Jack Vance as you speed to catch up with the sun? -- AndrewR, D.Bot (Celeritas) Kawasaki ZX-6R J1 BOTAFOT#2,ITJWTFO#6,UKRMRM#1/13a,MCT#1,DFV#2,SKoGA#0 (and KotL) BotToS#5,SBS#25,IbW#34, TEAR#3 (and KotL), DS#5, Keeper of the TFSTR# The speccy Geordie twat. -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |
