Default FOAK - Ducati's

1992 Ducati 750SS - is this a really dumb idea?
Asssuming theres evidence of service history whats likely to go wrong?
If I rode it during the winter would it disintegrate?
Why are they so cheap?

All I know about them is that a work colleague had one. He took it off
the road every winter and did a full frame/engine rebuild for the next
summer. The thing always looked immacculate and sounded beautiful. He
rode a CG125 while he was rebuilding his SS during the winter months.

Spark plugs, based on a UKRM sample of one . Make sure it's serviced
properly and has the belts changed every 6k and it should be OK...

Most likely, yes.

> Why are they so cheap?

Because they have a reputation for being very expensive /if/ they
grenade. Plus, they're not that cheap to look after and there are a lot
of dogs about that push down the prices even of good ones.

Excellent bikes, albeit nowhere near as fast as newer 600cc fours, but
the upside is they are so great to ride. It is the best version imo, as
it has more speed/power than the 600, without the clattering dry clutch
of the 900.
I've got a 1997 version, slightly updated - twin discs and other minor
mods.
As with all older bikes, you'll need to give it a good look over - new
shock, tyres and brake pads will be well over £350 if you diy, so check
everything out. Engine spares are apparently expensive, so make sure it
is isnt knocking or whining.
The engine needs new cam belts every 2 years or 12000miles iirc, but it
isnt a bad job at all, maybe 2 hours when you do it for the first time,
and can be done in half an hour when you have done it before - access is
dead easy once the side panel is off.
How cheap are they then?
I was thinking of selling mine in April, and getting a big Guzzi, but
when I saw I'd only get around £1500, there's no way I'd get rid for
that - I think this one is a keeper, that'll be with me for life now.

Early ones had poor QC and single disc front ends.

Go for a late model carb version: 1996-98. And they're probably the most
solid bike that Ducati have built for decades.

Hi Steve,

Don't be put off older Dukes - I have a '90 851 with 40k miles and it's well
put together and still pulls like a train. One guy has over 120k kms on his
without a whiff of anything major!

Dukes are stronger than most would have you believe - and build quality
generally better than my Jap bikes - esp. the RG500 - which is *really*
rough and ready in places...

Go on - you know you want one!

I'd agree with the former. The latter is true to a certain extent, but
IMHO Ducati build quality is variable.

The paint on my SS is really, really superb, even after a decade. Some
of the fasteners aren't so clever; nor the black-painted sections on the
exhausts. Crankcase paint isn't brill either, but it's hidden by the
fairing so wtf.

Looks coherent enough.

Don't be a pikey - buy a Haynes BOL. As for the sidestand, IIRC it's
just a matter of a longer bolt, but the dealer I bought mine from did it
out of the crate, and that was 10 years ago, so....

It's a piss-easy mod, anyway, whatever it is.

*Don't* buy a 96 model. That was the year Ducati became virtually
bankrupt and was then bought out by Texas Pacific Group. Build
quality was patchy to say the least. Get a post-97 bike.

Mine's a late 1997, and has been brilliant.

Not really, but a reasonably cheap foray into the Ducati 'thing'.

So not a 96 model then. QED,though my last sentence should have been
"post-96", as anyfule no.

Not surprised it was cheap, with that oval front wheel.

But my 96 600SS has done 35K miles and then got

You silly man. If you'd bought a post-97, you wouldn't have a busted
collarbone.

Exception that proves the rule then! I guess any 96s still going
should have had any problems shown up by now. I'd still be cautious
with a bike from that period though as I was told by one of the new
TPG management team that Ducati had been buying from a variety of
suppliers of variable reliability as their lines of credit ran out
with their older established suppliers.

Ta - seems its a bolt with a shallow head to allow the spring to pass over
it.
I am terribly pikey though and found the official 91-96 workshop manual as a
pdf.
Its 187mb - if you want a copy its here:
