Default FOAK: Disc Space

One of my PCs keeps running out of disk space. Even when I free up
half a gig by removing old programs withing a few days it seems to
have eaten it up again. WTF is going on?

The system history restoration is very memory hungry.

What file system is on it, NTFS, FAT32 or something else?

If it's used for surfing t'internet and the web cache is on then it
could be downloading a page or an image which is about 1Kb and
sticking it in a 64Kb cluster meaning that the 1Kb file takes up 64Kb
of physical disk space.

To find out what file system you've got you could open Explorer and
choose the drive in question from the left hand pane, right click on
it and go to Properties.

If it's using NTFS then I *think* that defaults to 64K clusters still.

Next step: Do a search in for all files on your hard drive which are
smaller than 64K, include hidden files in this search. Now look at
the total of how big they are. Keep that figure in mind and then
multiply the actual number of files on the drive by 64 and that's how
much space they're really taking up.

Of course, it could be something else entirely.

What about just doing a windows search for all files over 10Mb and
then sorting them by date to see what has 'grown' since you last
cleared it out.

Try http://www.ccleaner.com/

This will clean out all the crap (temp) files stored on the pc. Hense being
called Crap Cleaner.

Best of all, its free

Maybe worth a try right click c drive then properties, and click on Disk
Cleanup. You'd be suprised how much this can free up space (but can take a
little while depending how big the hard drive is)

Got a lot of restore points? If so, switch off the monitoring system.
Reboot. Switch restore back on.

I also find Treesize (a free utility) jolly useful in identifying large
files (especially videos and the like) that you can then delete if
they're no longer used.

Or you could just stop being such a pikey and buy a better PC.

PS: have you checked it through with AVG and SpyBot to check nothing
untoward is taking place?

Up to the limit of how much disc space you[1] have told it to use - yes.

Phil.

[1] Or - more accurately - it has calculated you can do without.

http://windirstat.info/ - shows you in a nice little picture, hover
over the obscenly large squares and it tells you the location at the
bottom. Click on one and it takes you to it in the file explorer above
the pic.

If you click a directory, it'll outline it in the picture and show you
how big that directory is in relation to everything else. Well worth
trying, very small and free.

Just tried it a cleared 51 gigs, nearly all from the GoogleEarth cache.
Won't this just load again next time I fire up GE?

The registry cleaner is very handy, it found all the links to the
non-english help files that I'd manually deleted from a load of applicaions
plus a variety of odds-n-sods.

It's worth running it multiple time is sequence 'til it gives a nil return
as it will first delete unwanted key data references, then next time fine
that there keys will no references and delete those, etc, unwraping the
empty nests.

I did take the option for a backup file, just is case, but the machines not
crashed or complained about anything yet....
