Default engine flush?

I've bought a 15 year old Kwak air-cooled twin with 12k on the clock
and am giving it a thorough going over. Would you recommend using
engine flush? It's been well looked after and the oil I drained out
was discoloured, but not terrible.

Was the oil black or was it one of these scary red looking things?

Buy some cheaper oil and change twice or thrice at 500 mile intervals.

"Engine flush" can cause more problems than it solves. Better to just put
in some cheap oil and change any in a weeks time, remembering to drain when
it's really hot.

I used to use engine flush regularly and never had any of the problems
people talk about, but I've heard warnings of terrible things
happening. Having said that, I've never heard a first-hand tale of one
of these terrible happenings, either.

These days I don't bother: having never done a control test I never
knew if it helped or not, so I figured that it probably wasn't worth
it. Certainly my Guzzi's internals were spotless after 30K miles of
just using good quality oil changed more-or-less at the correct
intervals; I never used flushing oil on it.

If you have doubts about the state of the engine internals then just
run the engine for a hundred miles or so on cheaper oil and then do a
proper oil/filter change.

Don't bother mate, it is a 15 year old Quack, the oil will be out of
that and marking your passage with a thin black line on the road behind
you soon enough anyway. Just keep topping it up as needs be.

Nope, black. Have you seen oil coming out red from a bike?!

Only if it's red oil... you said it was 'discoloured' which made me

Have you never seen oil before it goes into an engine? Hint: It's not
black before use.

I have seen oil before. The OP said that the oil which came out of
his bike was discoloured. As oil, when it's been used for any length
of time, is generally black I enquired as to the colour of it and he
replied black. So I'm not sure what the whole discolouration thing is
all about.

Yeah, that's normal, innit. As he said 'discoloured' I thought he
meant that it might be something exotic like lightly used red oil.

Erm, yes.

When I changed the oil in the TS50 and used 2-stroke stuff.

Not very bright.

1. Ignore what BGN says on bikes - he's had one for 10 mins
2. No one has used engine flush for 30 years
3. On such a low mileage bike, I wouldn't worry - just change the oil
and filter and you'll be fine
4. What sort of Kawasaki? There weren't many air-cooled twins on
Kawasakis book in 1992. Please tell me it's not a GPz305.

It's not just the length of time, it's the ignorance too

Could be a 250 scorpion? Was that the name? Belt drive too, IIRC, but
I'm wasted on painkillers this morning so could be imagining it all.

Maybe not in this thread but you are confident to a degree that is not

day you will realise how little you know and temper your advice

You're particularly flouncy this evening.

Be fair though, it was good advice. You can't fault him for that.

No, I said "Ignore BGN on bikes".

You really do know next to nothing.

BGN, listen to him. He speaks the truth. We all love and cherish you,
but when it comes to bikes, what you know could be written on a postage
stamp and there'd still be space for the National Anthem.

Afraid it is a GPz305. Starting to regret the purchase after reading
some of the member's opinions on these..

They're infamous for grenading.

However, make sure you change the oil *very* frequently, as this seems
to help with all the ones I've seen make reasonable mileages.

Oh dear.

Well, they were nice little bikes. Unfortunately, they were about the
most unreliable engine Kawasaki ever made.

However, all is not lost - if yours is still going, then change the
oil (don't bother with engine flush) and filter now, making sure you
use good quality semi-synth. Then, when you ride, always give the
engine a minute or two to warm up (this is good practice on all
engines, to be honest). And, make sure you change the oil and filter
regularly and religiously - I'd say every 2000 miles.

If you do that, it'll probably last. The problem is that most
motorcycle owners don't look after their bikes very well. Most bikes
can cope with this - the GPz305 can't, so you have to be good to it.

I drained the oil out of a Hillman Imp once, it had gone beyond black
and came out a brown muddy colour.

The woman who owned it didn't realise the oil needed changing, and it
had been in there about 5 years.

Ugh

Paul.

Oddly enough the experience of ukrm and the GPz305 is split fairly
evenly between those who have owned them and those who haven't. You as
I recall haven't.

True for any bike.
