Default Decent roads in the North East

SWMBO and myself are off up Scotland at the end of the month and I'm
planning on taking most of Thursday getting there. As I've never been to
the NE I thought we could take the opportunity. Can anyone recommend some
decent roads? I'm setting off from Accrington around 10am and need to be
in Edinburgh by 9ish.

Everyone who replies will say different things, but my immediate
reaction is as follows.

Take either Wharfedale or Ribbledale up to Hawes. Then Buttertubs
Pass, Keld then most of Arkengarthdale before turning left for Barnard
Castle. Then take Teesdale or, my favourite, Weardale to Alston.
Detour a few miles towards Penrith to pause at the Hartside Cafe
(great view, great road there) then retrace your steps back to Alston.
You can then either head for Brampton and go clockwise round the
forest along B roads to Hawick or head for Haydon Bridge and
Bellingham to Jedburgh. All good roads. Pause for tea in Kelso.

Have fun!

A686 from Penrith(ish) to Gateshead way is fabulous...

Sounds a nice route, whereabouts are you on it?

Erm, Brampton. Half an hour from Alston, 3/4 of an hour from the Lake
District, about the same to the Scottish Borders. Good biking
territory.

Sorry, didn't read it properly. Looking forward to it.

OK, I know its not North East, but two routes worth looking at on the way to
Scotland are:
A6 Kendal to Penrith
A701 Moffatt to Edinburgh. No traffic. Brilliant ride.
Join up these two with a run up the B road alongside the A74(M)

Avoid the A685 between Kendal and Tebay as some untrained road-monkeys
have been trying to repair what is rapidly turning into an unsurfaced road.

M6, J34 to Kirkby Lonsdale. A683 to Kirkby Stephen. A685 to Brough. B6276
to Middleton-in-Teesdale. B6277 to Alston. A686 from Alston to Penrith
taking in Hartside Pass. North on M6 until you see A7, scenic route to
Edinburgh.

Enjoy!
