Default Road Tax Question

Was the 25yr rule for not having to pay road tax rolling, i thought not but
i've heard mention that had or was due to change?

It was, but the current bunch of tossers we call a government froze it when
they got in, so it's stuck at pre-1973.

I don't think it was ever intended to be rolling, it was just handed out by
mistake by just a few licensing offices as the V5s originally had "25 year
exempt" written in them, since altered as everybody would be saving all
sorts of crap motors to qualify for the 'free' V.E.D. That's how I read it
at first.

Have a look at the FAQ, it's there so we don't have to answer this
question over and over again.

Thanks, good to see that (and it still has several months to run).

not specially. most things kept alive up to and beyond 25 years are looked
after. There's was no doubt a small trend to keep rotboxes on the road for
an extra year or so but they still have to pass the MOT, after all, and
there's little point in getting free licence if you have to spend 200 quid a
year getting it welded up to pass the test.

By making it a fixed date, instead of that you get people ringing 1973, 74,
75 etc. vehicles to make them into "1972" ones. Again, not many - but if
you have a 1973 or 74 one and access to a 1972 frame number... if it was
going to be exempt in a year anyway, you wouldn't bother - the ongoing
benefit would be minimal compared with the risk.

My reading of it is that our beloved chancellor dislikes any form of giving
things away for nowt - the only surprise is that he's not removed it
altogether, but presumably that requires more effort.
