Default Plug recommendations

Hi folks,

I found this group by searching around Google groups. I have a '62 BSA
A65 with a '65 Lightning bottom end. It was fitted by a previous owner
with twin Amal concentrics (930s) and a 12 battery & ignition. I live
in Brooklyn, New York and I have two sets of spark plugs to use, so
I'm asking for your recommendations. Oh, the plug cables are NGKs from
twin Lucas coils. My two options are NGK B8ES's or NGK BP6ES's . A
mechanic put the BP6ES's on, and said that's what I should be running.
Somebody else has said that the NGK cables are for racing and that I
probably shouldn't use it on a bike for city use. The Haynes manual
says use the B8ES's. What's your take? Is there a place on the
internet that explains all this? I just rebuild the carbs, but before
that, the B8ES's were fouling up and the bike rode erratically after
about 30 minutes of use.

Thanks in advance for your opinion(s).

I have only had this bike since last August, and I'm still learning
the ropes with it.

Chris

You have a number of queries, and some are inter-related.
'NGK cables only for racing' - who said that, a comedian?
Dont worry about which cables you use, so long as they are in good
condition, and spark well.
Plugs -trial and error. For a start, I'd use the recommended ones.If it
pinks too much, then get a softer plug, (or should that be colder?)
Running problems are rearely down to the wrong plug being used.

Carbs - how do you know they have been set-up correctly for the engine?
If it starts fine, and runs well throughout the rev range then it looks
like they are set up right, but be aware that there are a number of
different jets and slides available for these carbs which fine tune the
running of the bike.

You dont really say what problem you are having if any. Are the plugs
still fouling up? What, black carbon? Petrol? Both of those point to too
much petrol getting through, which could be too large jets being used,
or poorly adjusted carbs.

Also, ignition timing - that plays a crucial part of the engine running,
so needs to be set correctly.

I suggest you ask on the BSA Britbike forum
http://www.britbike.com/ubb/cgi-bin/...orum/f/10.html
or
http://tinyurl.com/34qyku
which is full of our American allies trying to get F.U.B.A.Y ,
SOBB running.
