Just to warn people halfords spray paint is useless on petrol tanks
I spent weeks rubbing down priming and the putting the final coat on a cb550 tank only to have it ruined the first time I spilled a drop of petrol on it. Not happy. |

I suspect that was what my BSA tank had been done with. First time I filled up and went for a ride I found two interesting things out. 1. There was no seal on the filler cap. 2. The paint was not petrol proof. Ah well - at least it's fixable. -- -- ^..^ Lone Wolf www.moonshiners.org.uk |

In true numpty fashion I sprayed the Turbo clutch cover in Halfords gloss black, thinking "I'll never get petrol on that". Of course the first time I pull the petrol pipe off the pressure from the fuel injection system sprays petrol everywhere. All is not lost, rub down the effected area and repaint. Then either use halfrauds petrol proof lacquer as has been suggested (I have never seen or used this) or find your nearest automotive paint supplier in yell pages and buy a spray can of 1k lacquer. Halfords paint is not that bad, but you need to use a good lacquer to finish the job. Here is one I did using their pearlesant metallic red with a U-Pol SMART lacquer finish. http://i12.tinypic.com/348odcl.jpg and yes this is petrol proof. - |

You know of course that petrol and pink don't mix at all well. Now it appears that blue is affected as well, which is bad news, especially as I have a Bloo bike which really needs a a bit of paint slapped on here and there and I was thinking of taking the opportunity and adding some extra Blooness to it. Hey ho. That was an easy decision to make. Thank you for your help. -- steve auvache |
