Default Charging 6 volt batteries

I've finally picked up a new battery from Mick Bull for the benly. He
said 'give it a bit of charge before you fit it'. How? Why? It's a new
just filled battery - why does it need more charge?

Ta.

I looked, it was complicated. I'll go and put the kettle on and wait
for someone to put it into non mechanically minded girl terms.

Then I might do some work. Possibly. I really CBA today.

It gets the electrons all warm before they're needed? A bit like tyre
warmers.

Can I have a brew too? They stuck aircon in this office and it's
freeeeezing.

It's been stood on the shelf and will have consequently lost some of it's
charge. A 'top-up' before fitting it goes a long way to maintaning it.

They don't come fully-charged. In fact a freshly-filled battery
probably won't have a charge at all..

Yes dry charged. About 2/3 electrical capacity or thereabouts. Should always
be trickle charged to full before use for maximum capacity/life. Nobody
bothers!

I've been telling all the complaining sweaty fatties (who demanded the
aircon be retrofitted to the building) that they need their thyroids
checking; but then I'm a bit cantankerous.

My fingers turn blue when I get too cold.
We're running the office at the same temperature as the data-centre!
There's less chance of ladies in tiny tops if it's cold anyway.

Different type of battery of course and possibly bad form, but I noted
this time I got a new phone which has... *fiddles, and reboots* a lithium
polymer battery, it doesn't ask for the usual 12-14 hour charge thing in
the manual. Um, I have no actual point.

That's sufficiently vague, ta.

Sure, I have coffee beans waiting to be ground, pre ground beans,
decent instant, boring instant and tea for those poor souls who don't

I've put a jacket on (black velvet darsy) as it's not quite cold
enough to put the heating back on, plus heating in July is wrong.

There's a puddle forming on the convertible's roof, I should really go

That involves waterproofs, or I would. Just cannot summon up any
enthusiasm today, which isn't like me at all, I think I exhausted my

I was coming back from Hull on Wednesday and debated phoning you and

*silly girl trying to answer a question*
I wouldn't do this before having a greasy man check my logic, but if you
have any way of starting the bike without the battery, can you not just
run that, then connect the battery and charge it off the bike magic? So
long as you don't use it to crank the bike over it won't be being "used".

My car one got down to 4V whilst stood, so I'd kind of written it off as
"bust", but I jumped the car from a jump pack and ragged it for about 10
minutes a couple of times a day, and I'm still using that battery for day
to day use. (It may be worth noting that I occasionally have to kick the
terminals to make the engine start when it's particularly wet, but it is a
Peugeot anyway...)

If I'm very very wrong with this logic, I'd appreciate a "why" because
batteries are cool, and a bit worrying when they fail and the bonnet's
shut.

Good man. It does make a helluva difference to the life expectancy of
the battery, all other things being equal - properly working charging
system, etc.

When it's made, the plates are chemically almost at the state they would
be in if it was a charged battery, but it's made dry, with no
electrolyte, so can't be in a fully charged state.

It's dry for transportation, and the dealer/end user must fill it then
charge it up for use. Definitely worth while doing, as (ime) it adds
years to the life of it. If you cold crank an uncharged new battery it
doesn't do it much good - best to bring it up to full charge and give it
the best chance of doing its job.

In general, yeah, but then you have different groups. One group - the one
that likes big boobs - is populated by immature mummy's boys who never
really cut the cord and who need to be comforted by burying their faces in
a huge cleavage and going 'brrrrrrrrrrr, mummy!!!!!! Brrrrrr!!!!'

http://minilien.fr/a0kh3y

Then there are the mature men who know what they want, and are able to
treat women as equals, secure in their masculinity and with no need to suck
their thumb when 'mummy' isn't there.
