I've finally picked up a new battery from Mick Bull for the benly. He
said 'give it a bit of charge before you fit it'. How? Why? It's a new just filled battery - why does it need more charge? -- Lady Nina |

Different type of battery of course and possibly bad form, but I noted this time I got a new phone which has... *fiddles, and reboots* a lithium polymer battery, it doesn't ask for the usual 12-14 hour charge thing in the manual. Um, I have no actual point. |

So long as you don't use it to crank the bike over it won't be being "used". My car one got down to 4V whilst stood, so I'd kind of written it off as "bust", but I jumped the car from a jump pack and ragged it for about 10 minutes a couple of times a day, and I'm still using that battery for day to day use. (It may be worth noting that I occasionally have to kick the terminals to make the engine start when it's particularly wet, but it is a Peugeot anyway...) If I'm very very wrong with this logic, I'd appreciate a "why" because batteries are cool, and a bit worrying when they fail and the bonnet's shut. |

When it's made, the plates are chemically almost at the state they would be in if it was a charged battery, but it's made dry, with no electrolyte, so can't be in a fully charged state. It's dry for transportation, and the dealer/end user must fill it then charge it up for use. Definitely worth while doing, as (ime) it adds years to the life of it. If you cold crank an uncharged new battery it doesn't do it much good - best to bring it up to full charge and give it the best chance of doing its job. -- Dave GS850x2 XS650 SE6a Teach a man to fish and he and his pikey mates will have the river cleaned out in a day. |
