Thanks, I'll do that just as soon as I take my Mac back to 10.4.9. My
'lucky bloke' syndrome struck again when I bought myself a webcam, and lo
and behold the Apple Security Update that I'd performed a few days before,
hosed sound support for _that_ particular camera. Worse, it had to happen
when I'd lent my Mac OS-X DVDs to someone...

I just got them back an hour ago, so am backing up and getting ready to go
back in time (so to speak).

May have changed now - I bought an LG DVD hard drive recorder from
them and unpacked it, tried it, hated it, so took it back. I noticed
from their warranty that 14 day returns shouldn't have been used,
unless returning as faulty, so I just re-taped the box and told them
it was crap - didn't have the features I needed. They refunded
without further question, apart from me confirming that there was
nothing on the hard drive. Now eagerly awaiting the samsung
DVD-SH855M that I was recommended, and has all the features I wanted
and some I didn't...

As to the OP, try Staples if you have one near you - I bought an
Iomega 250gb for less then £70, which has worked fine and silently,
and a Maxtor 300gb for around £80 (at least 6 months ago) which is
still in it's box since I've become paranoid about all the "Maxtor are
crap" reviews I've read...

Which I do.

Which is what I do and don't do.

Which I do unless I, or anyone else wants to watch the film and that's when
the drives are storing big files twice.

Which I do, but the number of files is growing, which answers the question
posed "How do you fill a hard drive *that* big?"

I bought a Maxtor 400 gig a year or so ago and it's been perfect. No noises
and no complaints. On the other hand, I bought a 500 gig Western Digital
last month and today it began the slow slide to the bin, taking ages to
start up and making clicky noises while it's trying.

Given a choice, I'd go with another Maxtor.

There were none at Summerfields today when I called in for a loaf of bread.

Well then unless you're about to watch something, or have just watched
it and haven't deleted it yet, any download is only going to take up as
much space as the original rar files. "Each 4.7 gig file now takes up
closer to 10 gig" only if you unpack them all and never delete them,
which apparently you don't do.

Have to say, I'm stumped.

See those files you downloaded and left seeding? Download some more.
Lots more.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Danny
<danny@nospam.gaggia-espresso.com> saying something like:

Unless you can ID the HD it contains as being a known troublesome model,
I wouldn't worry overmuch. Most/all of the HD makers have been through a
period of troublesome products, then come back up in quality.
