Default Veterans / Memorial Day Poem #20, A Long And Lonely Night

Veterans / Memorial Day Poem #20, A Long And Lonely Night

It was in the darkness of the night surrounding me,
That the loneliness of the moments cradled my emotions.
Visions of events that for so long I have sheltered,
Focused on my mind with the clarity of a fresh cut diamond.
A crimson red light seemed to create a misty image,
And within this image was the horror of the cursed Nam'.
It's immediate presence overwhelmed my thoughts,
And her hunger for my feelings took possession of me.

The screams and pain of the war I had fought seem so real,
And the moment brought me back to complete participation.
In an instant of disbelief,
I realized that I was not in control,
The Nam' was replaying her horrid memories in my mind.

I relived many emotional moments during that night,
And when the perspiration stopped, the tears instantly took over.
I shook for what seem to me like an eternity in time,
Then I awoke to realize that I was at home,
safe... or was I.
