Default UK: Radio 4, 15th May 12:30 BST, The Food Programme about keeping hens, and some info about buying battery hens in Berkshire

Radio 4's "The Food Programme" today is about what apparently is the fastest
growing hobby in the UK today - keeping chickens!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/foodprogramme.shtml repeated Monday at
16:30, after which is will be available to listen to online (see page for
details).
Some pictures of my hens.. http://www.digitaltoast.co.uk/gallery/chickens

If you're in Berkshire and you'd like to know how to get on the list for the
next batch of hens (within the next two weeks) email me (just put "chickens"
in subject line) at this address, and I'll pass on the details of the lady
who does it

Marketingspeak for "the smallest". There was one last year and
now there are two. Oh it's grown 100%, that much more than all
of the established ,<whatevers, in this case hobby>.

OK, where are you getting your figures from, Tim?
The place I got my straw, mash, grit and corn had to order more mash and
grit for me. He said everyone seems to want chicken stuff now, and he's got
through more layers mash so far this year than he did all of last year!

no, that's what it translates to in the real world.

So how does this relate to the 'growing' of the hobby. They could
all be bought by established people expanding.

I made them up. Ok 100 people expands to 200 people. It's still
an absolute small number, but a very big percantage.

Most established <whatever> expand at a rate of 2 or 3 % pa.
New ventures expand at 10, 20, 50 or 100% pa but they can
only do this because they are starting small. They don't expand
by that in the 2nd and 3rd year (and then some other small thing
will take over the 'largest expanding' tag).

The phrase "fastest expaning" is spin, used make the reader
think that the concern is bigger than it is, when in reality it's
piddly.

> The place I got my straw, mash, grit and corn had to order more mash and

Which means that he under estimated his market. How does it
prove anything else.

> He said everyone seems to want chicken stuff now,

How many people is his 'everyone'. Presumably people
who keep chickens as a commercial venture require this
stuff. This isn't a hobby.

Which proves what?

And what do you want your readers to think by the word 'piddly'? Or
'expaning' come to that ...

Are you suggesting that all statements are'spin', if so then yours are too
and we should ignore them if I understand your scorn properly.

They don't buy it from the same places- I'm wondering how much you know
about chicken keeping!

Your question proves to me that my doubts about your knowledge are probably
correct.

Because well over 50% of the enquiries to me and other suppliers I have
spoken to are from people who have never kept poultry before.

It IS a hobby - most definately -- it is the domestic poultry keeping we
are talking about
More and more and more folks are keeping poultry in their gardens - for
simple pleasure, for the eggs, and increasingly for the meat.

I would like to be put on the list for the next batch of Battery Hens that
are available.

I am in London but I have a 150' garden, very green and tree lined so lots of
room and space for the Hens and we are in Merton Park so the area is not
built up.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Yawn -- we breed chickens we do not get them wholesale - we do not deal in
them

However we also sell mail order equipment, housing and books.
It is one of our equipment wholesalers who had commented on the numbers.
Every supplier has seen a remarkable increase this year
