In uk.rec.pets.misc, Tina waffled thusly:
> [..] > I have always had a battle with her > pulling on the lead and i mean really pulling. Have you done any leash training in the garden (or at classes)? I've always refused to deal with this by getting different leads. And I can imagine how annoying this must be because my latest GSD pup went through nightmare six-weekly phases as far as pulling was concerned. The classic advice eventually paid off, despite the relapses, which no longer occur - thank god! Practise in your garden and have her stand in heel position: on one side of you, with her neck parallel to your leg. Say "heel" and step off the leg nearest to her first. If you are consistent, that nearest leg will become an eye level cue. Praise her when she remains in the heel position when you start walking. If she simply pulls ahead (she'll obviously do this at first), just halt, and repeat the process. After a couple of days, adapt the procedure to your regular walks. When she pulls ahead, stop. Don't even think of going further until she's in the heel position. I'm sure you can imagine it's a tedious process, and you might not get further than a single block on the first few occasions, but if she's like my GSD (independent and strong-minded as he is), it shouldn't be long before she's proudly walking alongside you every time you go out. -- Lee J.
