Default Importing Veterinary Medicines

Does anyone know what rights and restrictions hold in the UK with
regard to obtaining prescription veterinary medicines?

The reason I ask is that my dog now needs 3 different drugs on an
ongoing basis and it is getting very expensive. Although we have
insurance, long term prescriptions are only covered for the first
year. We already pay for one prescription and will soon have to pay
for another. The third has only just been prescribed. I have done some
preliminary research and there are web sites in the US that supply at
least one of these - the one we already pay for - for less than half
of what we pay the vet. (Note that I am excluding the other payments
to the vet for tests and consultancy.) The US web site requires a
vet's prescription to be faxed to the company before they will supply.

So the question really boils down to 2 parts:

(i) Is it legal to import drugs from such a company?

(ii) Is my vet likely to want to provide me with a prescription that I
could use elsewhere? (Ideally, I'd like to hear that he is legally
obliged to.)

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
