Help! Nervous Staffy Hates Storms...

....and jets flying overhead, lorries going past house, fireworlks.
Everytime he hears any of these things, he shivers and shakes and
pants and appears to be having a kind of panic attack, with rapid
panting. He tears around the house trying to find somewhere to hide -
and we can't calm him down whatever we do.
We rescued him from a shelter, and he is *really* well behaved and
well-trained - he just goes to pieces when he hears loud rumbly
noises.
We are dreading November 5th - can anyone advise any remedy for this?
Is it common in this breed? (I didn't think so from experiences of
friends)

Any advice gratefully received!
